Melton parents urged to apply for funding to create local playgroup

Member for Melton, Don Nardella MLA,  has today urged locals wanting to start a playgroup in our region to apply to share in the $50,000 Andrews Labor Government’s Great Start Community Playgroup Fund.

Minister for Families and Children, Jenny Mikakos, announced the new grants during the launch of National Playgroup Week.

Mr Nardella said:

“This week celebrates the important role playgroups have in offering families the chance to come together to learn, play and support each other.

More than 40,000 children and 30,000 families participate in playgroups in Victoria each year with more than 3500 playgroups running across the state each week.

The additional funding would allow more locals to find a playgroup close to home.”

Grants of up to $1000 will help parents in our region starting a new community playgroup get the resources needed, such as books, toys and play equipment.

The funding will also help pay for much needed mentoring support, to establish a successfully run playgroup.

Priority for the grants is given to community playgroups in areas where there are currently none or a low number operating.

Playgroup Victoria administers the fund, and has assisted and supported those looking to establish new playgroups. So far the grants have resulted in 65 new playgroup sessions across the state.

Playgroups create an inclusive, safe environment for children to develop their social skills and learn about the world.

The Labor Government is committed to making Victoria the Education State – and this begins with giving every child a strong start in life.

Mr Nardella said:

“We want every family to have access to a quality playgroup close to home so they don’t have to waste time travelling too far.

Playgroups are a fantastic way for parents and children to make friends and establish support networks in their local communities.”
