The Member for Melton Don Nardella MLA, has supported the Andrews Labor Government’s funding of veterans and their families; to get the help and support they deserve through the RSL with $400,000 state funding for veteran welfare programs.
Mr Nardella said:
The RSL provides for the sick, needy or wounded who served our country, as well as their families. Assistance may include short-term accommodation for veterans in crisis or help with day-to-day tasks like lawnmowing and grocery shopping.
The RSL also provides advocacy for veterans attempting to secure their entitlements from the Commonwealth, and supports the families of those defence personnel currently deployed overseas.
Already, the RSL provides hundreds of sub-branches with funding for veterans’ welfare projects. The $400,000 commitment in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget will help these projects flourish, so veterans can live their lives after service with the dignity they deserve.
Victoria helps thousands of returned servicemen and women every year. Many face ongoing mental or physical health issues as a result of their service. This can impact heavily on their lives, and their families.
The Labor Government is already teaming up with the RSL to build units in Richmond for veterans in need, on top of the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year generated from the Anzac Day Proceeds Fund for the welfare of veterans.
We are committed to ensuring Victoria’s living veterans and their families are equipped to live the stable and happy lives they deserve.
Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews said:
The brave sacrifice of our veterans will be forever etched in our history. After all they’ve given, it’s important we give them the help and support they deserve.
The RSL provides for those who served our country when they have nowhere else to turn. As a Government and as a state, we should do all we can to support this important work.
Minister for Veterans, John Eren said:
The Andrews Labor Government’s commitment ensures veterans get a helping hand, from crisis management, to navigating the DVA payments and benefits programs.
